We recently completed our birth classes at hospital, and while they were informative and interesting, almost every video was not Australian.

I liked that I could skip to parts that interested me and I’m sure that will be useful when I want to revisit parts in the future.  I know that friends of mine who have had their 2nd or 3rd children have said it would be handy to have a refresher before going into labour again.

Birth Education Video Series

1) Options for Care-

Pregnancy is sometimes described as a 'rollercoaster' ride- you get on it when you find out that you are pregnant, and you don't really know all of the options available to you, unless you are informed of them.

In this segment, a General Practitioner, an Obstetrician, a Doula, an Independent midwife, and a hospital-based midwife talk about the options that are available to you for your pregnancy care through a health care provider of your choice.

2) Changes in pregnancy-

Carolina (midwife) helps you to understand what effects in your mind and body can be considered 'normal' through your pregnancy.

3) Your Antenatal Visits-

Our GP, Saroja, talks about what your health care provider will be checking and talking to you about in your visits through your pregnancy.

4) Gestational Diabetes-

  • Gestational diabetes accounted for 9% of new cases of diabetes in Australia 1999-2002 (The National Diabetes Register, Australia’s Health 2004, AIHW)

Claudia, talks about her experience with gestational diabetes.

5) Tests during pregnancy-

Kay, our genetic counsellor, discusses many of the tests that will be offered to you through your pregnancy.  She talks about what each test involves, and the implications of the results of the tests that you choose.

6) Healthy Diet-

Amanda (dietician) discusses the challenge of eating a healthy diet when you are pregnant.  She also clearly shows which foods to avoid during pregnancy.

7) Exercise in Pregnancy-

Liz (physiotherapist) looks at the importance of looking after your pelvic floor, and how to look after yourself when you exercise while pregnant.

8) Herbs in pregnancy -

Kara, women's health naturopath, has looked after women during their pregnancy for many years.  She introduces the importance that herbs can have in the care of the woman during pregnancy and after birth.

9) Breastfeeding-

There are many myths about preparing your nipples for breastfeeding.  In this segment, Leanne, a Lactation Consultant, talks about some of the things you might want to learn about breastfeeding before your baby arrives.

10) Maternity Bras-

Lorren from Bella Bellies Maternity Boutique

shows Lisa what to look for when trying on and buying a maternity bra.

11) Dads-

Coran talks to some Dads about what to expect during pregnancy, and how being a Dad is such an integral part of the whole experience for you both.

12) Homebirth & Waterbirth-

Waterbirth is now offered in many institutions as a way to birth your baby.  Independent midwife, Jane discusses many of our misconceptions about these wonderful opportunities for birth.

13) Doula-

A Doula is a professional support person to support you through pregnancy, birth and after the birth.  Having a doula can significantly reduce your time in labour, as well as reduce your risk for caesarian, augmentation, and baby being sent to Special Care Unit.

See what Lisa has to say about using a doula during birth

14) Yoga-

Jan Baxter is a qualified Iyengar Yoga teacher that specialises in pregnancy and postnatal exercise.  In this segment Jan discusses the benefits of yoga to pregnant women.

She gives some pointers for opening your uterus and how to take care of yourself when doing yoga poses.

15) Hypnobirth-

Lindsey is well known in the Illawarra for her work with women who have had a non-positive first birth experience.  She knows too well the importance of breaking through your fears surrounding birth and trusting in your body.

Lindsey also talks you through a short relaxation practice that you can do every day.

Testimonial re DVD 1

This is a wonderful resource for all prospective parents (and even parents who have "been there and done that").  As the series covers more topics than the regular hospital based classes, this is a great option to use in addition to hospital ante-natal classes or as an alternative and particularly for people living in isolated areas.

Having a personal copy, allows segments to be revisited as required and watched at your own pace.  This information could be just what you need to ensure a wonderful experience in pregnancy, birth and those early weeks. The Birthing Sense series really is essential viewing.

The DVD covers all aspects of pregnancy in a simple, yet informative manner.  It gives non-biased information on choice of caregivers to provide viewers with a knowledge of the options available to them.

It goes on to clearly explain many important aspects of pregnancy such as a discussion on the tests available, diet, exercise, use of herbs, breastfeeding and a very informative segment on fitting maternity bras. Diagrams and a model of the pelvic bone structure are cleverly used to enhance the information provided.

The DVD contains essential information to support and encourage natural, active birth. Homebirth, waterbirth and use of a doula are covered as well as yoga and hypnobirthing, both of which I  have personally used successfully.

My partner watched the DVD with me and we both found it to be informative and comprehensive, yet simple and easy to watch.  The segments are short and succinct giving just the right amount of information without allowing the viewer to become overwhelmed or bored.

The DVD ends beautifully with a relaxation exercise.

This is a DVD that I would thoroughly recommend to any prospective parent, I will absolutely visit this site again and recommend it to friends and family.
